Follow the Good Shepherd. Jesus is the Good Shepherd who knows us, finds us and gave His life for us.
Theme verse
I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.John 10:11 (KJV)
The five days
Day 1 · Shepherd’s Field
God sees my heart.
Bible story: Samuel Anoints David (1 Samuel 16:1–13)
Apply it: Samuel thought the tallest, strongest brother had to be God’s choice, but the LORD told him, “Man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.” God chose David, the youngest, who was faithfully caring for his father’s sheep when nobody was watching. You don’t have to be the biggest, the best or the most popular to matter to God. He sees your heart. And because God looks at hearts, we can look past the outside when we treat other people too.
Day 2 · Giant Valley
God is bigger than any giant.
Bible story: David and Goliath (1 Samuel 17:1–51)
Apply it: The whole army saw a giant too big to fight. David saw a God too big to lose. He remembered how God had helped him against the lion and the bear, and he told Goliath, “I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts.” One stone, and the giant fell. Our giants might be fear, a bully, a sickness or worry. We face them the way David did: by remembering what God has already done and trusting Him with what comes next.
Day 3 · Searching Hills
Jesus looks for the lost.
Bible story: The Lost Sheep and the Lost Coin (Luke 15:1–10 · Matthew 18:12–14)
Apply it: The shepherd left the ninety and nine to search for the one that was lost, and when he found it, he carried it home on his shoulders and threw a party. That is exactly how Jesus feels about every person: no one is too far away, too messy or too small. “There is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth.” If you have ever felt lost, Jesus is looking for you. And He invites us to join the search by inviting, including and praying for friends who don’t know Him yet.
Day 4 · The Shepherd’s Gate
Jesus gave His life for me and rose again.
Bible story: The Good Shepherd (John 10:1–18)
Apply it: “All we like sheep have gone astray,” the Bible says; every one of us has sinned and wandered away from God. A hired hand runs when the wolf comes, but the Good Shepherd gives His life for the sheep. Jesus did exactly that: He died on the cross for our sins, and on the third day He rose again. His sheep hear His voice and follow Him, and no one can pluck them out of His hand. You can become one of His sheep today by turning from your sin and trusting Jesus as your Shepherd.
Day 5 · Ranch Hands
I follow Jesus and care for others.
Bible story: Feed My Sheep (John 21:15–19)
Apply it: Peter had failed Jesus three times, but by the sea Jesus asked him three times, “Lovest thou me?” and then gave him a job: “Feed my sheep.” Jesus forgives and gives us a place on His team. Loving Jesus shows up in caring for His people. You can feed His sheep by helping a younger child, praying for a friend, sharing what you learned this week, or bringing food for families who need it.
